Art Contest

Illinois students, grades K-12, are invited to participate in the annual Art Contest sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This exciting collaboration creates visibility for the work and talent of young Illinois artists and reinforces the importance of the arts in the growth and development of all students.

The contest opens each fall to submissions across three age groups: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. After entries are received in December, a panel of seasoned judges evaluate artwork on creativity and general design before selecting the finalists and runners-up in each category, as well as an overall winner. Winning artists are recognized in an awards ceremony in February and their work is placed on display in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

2020 Contest

The Art Contest theme for 2020 was “Leadership is an Art.” Students were required to create a two-dimensional piece of art reflecting the theme and representing the five areas of art (dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts). Gallery of Winning Artwork

Beginning in 2019, the judging committee chose an overall winner for the contest. Their work is featured on the Illinois Art Education Week’s annual poster. From 2015-2018, the ALPLM hosted an independent art contest with winners in each age group category.
